Our NEW EU
Membership Referendum Petition
Membership of the European Union (EU) has
a substantial impact upon, and cost to, every subject and
resident of the United Kingdom. 75% of all our national
laws emanate from the EU and the UK is the second largest
net financial contributor at a time when there are substantial
public sector cut backs impacting on our everyday lives.
Many maintain that EU membership results in unrepresentative
and unresponsive government, burdensome, unwanted regulations
which inhibit traditional freedoms and strangle enterprise.
Many others believe that it fosters good international
relations, increases trade and enhances British influence.
This campaign seeks only to ‘Let the People Decide’ our
future in the EU. Opinion polls have consistently demonstrated
that the sovereign people of the UK would like to resolve
this vital constitutional issue one way or the other. All
the principal political parties have promised referendums
(including IN/OUT) but consistently failed to provide them.
Almost 80% of the electorate have never had a say on the
UK’s relationship with the EU. With so wide a disparity
of opinion, it is surely right in principle and essential
in practice that this matter should be democratically resolved.
We
believe that the time to have our say on the EU is
NOW!
We
the undersigned call for a binding national referendum
to decide whether or not Her Majesty’s
Government should invoke Article 50 of the Lisbon
Treaty to negotiate the United Kingdom’s withdrawal
from the European Union. This petition seeks to utilise
the following provision; ‘‘The petition
with the most signatures will enable members of the
public to table a bill eligible to be voted on in
Parliament” as set out in Article 24 of the
Coalition’s Programme for Government.
